In August 1977, the Big Ear radio telescope at Ohio State University detected something strange coming from the direction of the constellation Sagittarius. It was a narrowband radio signal, strong enough to stand out from the background noise, and unusual enough that astronomer Jerry Ehman circled the printout and wrote “Wow!” in red ink.
What Happened
The signal lasted for 72 seconds, which was exactly the amount of time Big Ear could observe one fixed point in the sky as Earth rotated. That timing made it especially interesting. It looked like a real signal from space passing through the telescope’s field of view, not just a random burst or normal interference.
The signal was never heard before, and despite many later searches, it has never been detected again. Scientists checked possible explanations, including satellites, aircraft, Earth-based radio interference, and natural cosmic sources. Nothing has fully closed the case.
Why It Matters
The “Wow!” Signal matters because it is one of the most famous possible candidates for a signal from an intelligent source beyond Earth. It was not a blurry photo, a witness story, or a campfire legend. It was recorded by scientific equipment during a serious search for extraterrestrial signals.
That does not mean aliens definitely sent it. A mystery is not the same thing as proof. But the signal remains important because it behaved in a way that caught the attention of people who were specifically looking for something unusual from deep space.
