I was on a barge by myself at night in high fog. I was guiding the captain into the bank over the radio. We settled in and I was just waiting to see what the current was doing. We were inching closer to the bank in around 8 to 10 feet of water. The barge was starting to sink into the sand. I was startled by a large thumping sound against the barge below me. The water was splashing and I saw fins. It was probably 10 to 12 feet long. I saw the wake disappear and the water swallow a shape that swam away in an instant. Catfish? Shark? I couldn't say. I didn't see it well. Sometimes your imagination can fill in gaps that can be more frightening than the truth.
