For decades, reports of large black triangular aircraft have occupied a strange middle ground between UFO sightings and secret military aviation.
One name has become attached to those stories more than almost any other: the TR-3B.
Depending on which version of the story you encounter, it is called the TR-3B Astra, the Black Manta, a flying triangle, or an aircraft so classified that the United States government supposedly refuses to acknowledge its existence.
There is just one problem.
There is no publicly verified evidence that an aircraft matching the extraordinary TR-3B story actually exists.
What Is The TR-3B?
The most famous version of the TR-3B story appeared publicly in the late 1990s through claims made by Edgar Fouché, a former Air Force member and defense-industry employee.
During a 1998 presentation, Fouché claimed that a highly classified triangular reconnaissance aircraft called the TR-3B operated from secret test facilities in Nevada.
His description went far beyond ordinary stealth technology.
Fouché claimed the craft contained a circular device he called a Magnetic Field Disrupter. According to his account, mercury-based plasma circulated at tremendous pressure and speed inside the aircraft, creating an effect that supposedly reduced the influence of gravity on much of the vehicle’s mass.
He claimed this allowed the aircraft to hover, accelerate rapidly and perform maneuvers that would otherwise be impossible for a conventional aircraft.
Those claims have never been publicly demonstrated.
The Black Manta Problem
Even the aircraft’s name becomes confusing once the story is examined closely.
Reports of an alleged TR-3A “Black Manta” were circulating before Fouché introduced the TR-3B story.
The TR-3A was generally described as a much more conventional secret reconnaissance aircraft: a triangular stealth aircraft supposedly associated with F-117 operations.
The later TR-3B story was considerably more exotic.
Over time, internet articles, diagrams, videos and UFO discussions frequently blended the two stories together. The names TR-3A, TR-3B, Black Manta and Astra are now sometimes used almost interchangeably even though the original claims described different aircraft.
That makes tracing the story difficult.
What is clear is that the spectacular anti-gravity claims associated with the TR-3B trace largely back to Fouché’s account rather than an authenticated military document.
The Part That Makes The Story Believable
Secret aircraft are not imaginary.
The United States has repeatedly developed aircraft that remained hidden from the public for years.
The F-117 Nighthawk first flew in 1981 and became operational in 1983, yet the Air Force did not publicly acknowledge its existence until 1988.
Area 51 was genuinely used to test highly classified aircraft including the U-2 and A-12 OXCART reconnaissance programs.
The B-2 Spirit also demonstrated that extremely unusual flying-wing aircraft could emerge from classified development programs.
So the general idea that an aircraft could exist for years before the public learns about it is historically documented.
That history gives stories such as the TR-3B an element of plausibility that many other conspiracy theories do not have.
But it does not prove the TR-3B exists.
Where Is The Evidence?
Despite decades of discussion, no publicly authenticated TR-3B airframe has appeared.
There is no verified government specification sheet identifying an operational TR-3B.
There is no publicly authenticated photograph that can conclusively be tied to the aircraft described by Fouché.
And the extraordinary gravity-reduction system attributed to the craft has never been publicly demonstrated.
There are plenty of images online supposedly showing the aircraft, but many are computer renders, illustrations or photographs of unidentified objects that were later labeled TR-3B.
That is an important distinction.
A photograph of a triangular object is evidence that something triangular was photographed. It is not automatically evidence that the object was a TR-3B.
Black Triangles
The TR-3B story also became connected to the wider mystery of black-triangle UFO sightings.
Witnesses have reported large triangular objects for decades, sometimes describing slow movement, unusual lights and very little sound.
Some sightings may involve conventional aircraft, formations of aircraft or classified technology. Others remain unidentified.
But assigning the name TR-3B to an unexplained triangle creates a circular problem.
The sighting is used as evidence that the TR-3B exists, while the alleged existence of the TR-3B is then used to explain the sighting.
Neither proves the other.
Why It Matters
The TR-3B sits at an interesting intersection between documented history and modern mythology.
We know secret aircraft programs exist.
We know the United States operated aircraft for years before admitting they existed.
We know revolutionary stealth technology was developed at secret facilities in Nevada.
Those are facts.
The leap occurs when those facts are used to support a very specific aircraft with extraordinary propulsion technology for which no publicly verified evidence has appeared.
That does not prove the aircraft cannot exist.
It means the TR-3B remains a claim rather than a confirmed aircraft.
T Funk Take
This one is difficult because we know the government really does build aircraft in secret.
Step 1: What would its job actually be?
If the name follows the same pattern as the real TR-1, then TR would mean Tactical Reconnaissance. So the first thing I ask is whether an aircraft like this would even have a practical role.
A massive floating triangle hovering around a battlefield doesn’t immediately sound very tactical to me. Then again, tactical reconnaissance doesn’t necessarily mean small or low-flying.
And with size comes payload capacity. More fuel, more sensors, possibly weapons, and potentially the ability to remain over an area for a very long time. Maybe the idea was to build something that could linger, gather intelligence and still carry enough equipment to pack a bigger punch if needed.
At least that gives the alleged aircraft a possible job.
Step 2: Propulsion
This is where I start having problems.
Fouché claimed the aircraft used a rotating ring of mercury-based plasma under enormous pressure and cooled to extremely low temperatures to somehow reduce the effects of gravity on the aircraft.
My first thought is whether the spinning material is supposed to create some kind of gyroscopic or electromagnetic effect, but that’s speculation on my part. Fouché’s claim goes much further and says the system actually reduces the effect of gravity.
Why mercury?
Could another ionized material accomplish the same thing? Why would mercury specifically be necessary?
And now you’re talking about an incredibly complicated system involving mercury, extreme pressure, powerful electromagnetic fields and equipment operating under conditions far outside anything publicly demonstrated to reduce gravity.
That’s a lot of engineering problems to solve just to make the aircraft fly.
Step 3: Isn’t There An Easier Way?
You would think there would be easier ways to accomplish the mission.
Today, several smaller unmanned aircraft working together could probably perform many of the surveillance jobs you might imagine for something like this without requiring one enormous, exotic aircraft.
But we also have to think about how military projects develop.
A secret program might have been approved decades ago when the technology, threat and mission requirements were completely different. Large amounts of money could have already been invested before newer technology made the original concept less useful.
If something like that happened, there might not be much reason to ever publicly acknowledge the program. It could simply disappear into the history of classified projects.
Still, without physical evidence, authenticated documents or independently verified technology, I can’t see a good reason to believe the TR-3B described in these stories actually existed.
People certainly have reported seeing large, slow-moving or hovering triangular objects.
But whether those objects have anything to do with the TR-3B is another question entirely.
And that’s another Case File.
Case remains open in the T Funk Era archive.
